Ketika di aliri listrik, motor kompresor akan berputar dan memberikan tekanan pada refrigerant atau gas freon. Gas Freon ini mempunyai sifat bila mendapat tekanan akan berubah sifatnya menjadi gas yang bertekanan tinggi dan bersuhu tinggi, ini bisa kita buktikan bahwa ketika lemari es dalam kondisi hidup seluruh body lemari es akan terasa panas bila dipegang.
Selanjutnya adalah Gas Freon yang bertekanan dan bersuhu tinggi tersebut melewati kondensor, ketika berada dalam kondensor ini gas freon tadi diubah lagi sifatnya menjadi gas cair dengan suhu rendah namun tetap bertekanan tinggi hingga akhirnya mencapai suhu kondensasi.
Kemudian gas freon tadi akan melewati filter lalu menuju pipa kapiler yang berdiameter sangat kecil, kemudian masuk ke saluran Evaporator. Pada saat berada di Evaporator inilah gas Freon yang bersuhu sangat rendah namun bertekanan tinggi ini akan menguap dan kembali ke wujud semula yaitu gas namun tetap bersuhu rendah.
Penguapan ini terjadi karena adanya penyerapan panas dari ruang Evaporator, akibatnya udara yang berada di ruangan Evaporator ini akan terkondensasi. Karena kondisi ini terus berulang selama masih dialiri listrik, lama kelamaan udara tersebut akan menjadi butiran-butiran es. Hal tersebut juga akan terjadi pada benda yang diletakkan di dalam ruangan Evaporator.
Aliran Freon tersebut akhirnya meninggalkan Evaporator dan kembali menuju kompresor. Proses ini akan terus berputar dan berulang-ulang. Pada kondisi normal dan tidak ada kebocoran, gas freon akan terus mengalir dan tidak akan pernah habis.
